Appeals Case Study:

Vibe of Portland

Learn how story helped an arts organization meet their funding goals.

For organizations that depend on public support, the problem is all too familiar: your effectiveness and track record speak for themselves, but those truths are lost in a flood of information competing for your audience’s attention. Though your calls for support are legitimate, without a compelling emotional argument that call falls on deaf ears. Our testimonial-driven approach helps cut through the rhetoric and present a clear and resonant argument for your cause.

The Challenge

Vibe of Portland provides arts education at little to no charge to children in underserved communities, where funding for the arts has been drastically cut or eliminated completely. Though the quantifiable, demonstrable positive effect of arts education is well documented, there is no consensus on the best way to address the problem, and during the busy holiday charitable giving season— during which Vibe procures a majority of the year’s funding—the organization found themselves competing for a limited pool of support with other similar arts organizations.

Our Approach

To help Vibe stand out, we focused on the aspect that sets them apart: stability. Though other organizations attempt to fill the void in arts education through short-term artist residencies, Vibe places teaching artists in schools on a permanent basis, allowing instructors to build trust with their students over time. The importance that trust is expressed beautifully by Vibe instructor Mary Dixon, who credits the encouragement she enjoyed from an arts instructor as a child as being a formative event in her career as an educator, and a guiding motivation for her to provide the same opportunities to her pupils.
